In our system, we have three kinds of links between messages: In-Reply-To: A link which causes the two messages to be seen as belonging to the same conversation (thread), and which is mainly References: A link which does not cause the two messages to be seen as belonging to the same conversation. Link name Corresponding link type Description in KOM in e-mail in netnews In-Reply- In-Reply- Does not Link between two messages To To exist in a thread in personally addressed mail. Comment In-Reply- References Link between two messages To in a thread in a group discussion. References References Does not Link between two messages exist which does not combine them into a thread. The names of the links in KOM above are not final, the system is not ready yet. Our problem is that "References" seems to have different meaning in Internet mail and in Usenet News. Since we have both possibillities with different link types in KOM, which of them should we give the name "References". And how should we translate the link type which we above tentatively has named "References" into Usenet News, since this usage of the term "References" agrees with the terminology in e-mail but not with the terminology in netnews. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Jacob Palme (Stockholm University and KTH) for more info see URL: http://www.dsv.su.se/~jpalme
