E.G. Withycombe's book, in three editions, is the most comprehensive and well researched book on the history of modern English and American given names, containing extensive information about the origins of the names as well as dated citations for usage.

I tried for 7 years to obtain a copy of this book, which was virtually impossible since it was out of print, and no one was willing to reprint it.
