(e) Kahle v. Ashcroft

Sentinel Worlds 1

originally submitted by D. Moonfire:

A computer game that came out in the 80 that is no longer produced or sold.

Stifled uses

D. Moonfire:

Some time ago, I wanted to play a game that I enjoyed very much as a child. But, the game was only on the shelves for a few short months and pulled off by the owner as not selling enough. I purchased the game long before, but lost it through moving from place to place. However, there is almost no place that it can be bought legally. The only way to find it is to go to an abandonware site, but I avoid because of the legality. Reading on the web, the owners of the game will not produce a new version (the technology and graphics are too old) but they will also not answer any request to push it into public domain; it is as if the game ceased to exist in their eyes.

This story actually applies to a lot of abandoned computer games. Dismissed by their publishers and distributors, they are left in a void despite a small group of people who still enjoy them.
