(e) Kahle v. Ashcroft

various works by James H Schmitz

originally submitted by Douglas Godfrey:

All of the works written by
James H Schmitz were out of
print at leas 25 years.

Recently after recieving 20+
years of requests from SF
readers, Baen Books secured
the rights to reprint the
catalog of James H Schmitz.

If there are tens of thousands
of customers who want to buy
a book there is no excuse for
copyright law putting
artificial barriers in the way
of a book being published.

If a book has been out of
print for 5+ years there
should be a mandatory license
rate at which the book can be
reprinted by any other
publisher.

It took years for Baen Books
(a major SF publisher)
to negotiate the rights to
reprint the works of Schmitz.

Stifled uses

Douglas Godfrey:

I wanted to have the complete
set of works by an outstanding
author of science fiction.
