(e) Kahle v. Ashcroft

Chimp's Last Chance

originally submitted by Murray Chapman:

1920s-era B&W silent film; 200' Regular-8 reel. No credits or production company information on the film itself. Original packaging indicated "Castle Film" with no contact information.

Stifled uses

Murray Chapman:

The print is deteriorating; the acetate base of the film is turning to jelly. Further, the regular-8 projector required to display it is similarly decrepit and it's basically impossible to find replacement bulbs or other parts. I wanted to transfer the work to MiniDV and/or DVD so I could continue to enjoy it, however my understanding is that copyright law does not allow this. I have attempted to locate "Castle Films"; the only information I have found on them is that they ceased operations in 1972. There are a few collectors on the internet who have heard of this film, but it's always the regular-8 "Castle Films" version that is probably in a similar state of decay. I love this film and want to show it to my children, but I can't because I'm afraid that one more trip through the projector will reduce it to a smoldering, molten puddle.
