Lost History – Great-Grandfather
originally submitted by Andreas Trawöger:
This story is part of my family history. My grandmother married another men shortly before I was born. This man became my grandfather although legally he isn't.
One of the story my grandfather told me was how his father ended up in concentration camp for two years and barely survived it. The reason was a school book.
My great-grandfather was professor of history and wrote together with two others a book about history in 1933. This book was used in Austrian school classes in the time from 1933 - 1938. The book was quite opposed to National Socialism the idea of a unified German (unification of all countries and regions where German is spoken).
In 1938 Austria was occupied by Germany (a move which was welcomed by most of the Austrians). My great-grandfather was arrested for Anti-German agitations and send to the concentration camp Dachau.
He was released two years on probation after both my Grandfather and his brother join the Wehrmacht "voluntarily". My great-grandfather was told that if he does anything suspicious he will be send to Dachau and that he shouldn't expect to come back next time. In another cynical move he was forced to collect money for the NSDAP (the National Sozialist Party) till the end of World War II. The brother of my grandfather was killed two years later after his plane was shot.
After current copyright laws the book of my great-grandfather can't be republished till 2038.
This is cynical, because it means that current copyright law helps suppressing literature that was written to stop National Socialism.
I haven't tried to clear the copyrights yet, because I don't know anything about the other two authors and have no clue who own the copyrights of my great-grandfather (my grandfather had two daughters with two different wifes before he married my grandmother ;-))
